The Sit/Kneel Chair is designed for stress-free comfort and allows one to sit in perfect balance

This relieves backward pressure on the lumbar spine. The muscles of your back and neck are most relaxed and tension-free when you sit really straight, with slight hollow (lordosis) in the lower back and your neck upright with chin tucked in – imagine the top of the back of the head being drawn up towards the ceiling. In this kneeling posture, most of the weight of your head is taken straight down through the spine, and not as muscular tension at the back of the neck and shoulders. The Sit/Kneel Chair allows you to sit with correct pelvic posture, whereas ordinary chairs tend to make you slouch.

Often aches and pains in the muscles at the back of the neck and shoulders are caused by bad lumbar posture, and can be relieved by sitting with the pelvis in alignment with the spine, as it is when you stand up straight, maintaining the lordosis in the lumbar spine.

Why does the chair have a sloping seat? – The closest angle at the pelvis between the thigh and the vertical axis of the pelvis is approximately 120 degrees. We are not L-shaped! When you sit on an ordinary chair, your thighs are more or less horizontal so your pelvis tilts back and you lean into the back of the chair. This is what makes us slouch. The Sit/Kneel Chair has a forward sloping seat so that in your sitting position your thighs slope downwards to make approximately 120 degrees at the pelvis, allowing the axis of the pelvis to be upright. (This relief of the backward pressure on the hip joints makes the chairs particularly comfortable to many people who have undergone hip replacement surgery.) In front of the seat is the knee pad on which you can rest your shins. It is not necessary for your posture to rest your legs on the pad all the time – see below.

Designed to be comfortable and kind to your knees

The seat is designed and shaped to stop you from sliding forwards onto your knees so preventing pressure on the shins. By turning slightly to one side or the other, you can straighten one leg at a time in front of you to prevent constriction of the circulation. If you sit on the front of the seat with your knees at the front of the knee pad, the weight of your legs is supported across the width of the front pad of the chair, and your feet lift off the floor so you can easily move them about.
